Staying Strong

Day 8

I’ve spent most of my adult life “cycling” through periods of good and poor exercise habits. When I’m on, I’m on. When I’m off, I’m off; there seems to be no middle ground. This isn’t by any means a healthy way to deal with life – but the good news is that I’m currently in an On phase.

These days I’m focusing on doing everything I can do to stay as healthy as possible.

I have a long way to go in regards to my nutrition, but am drinking plenty of water and getting to the gym 4-5 days a week. It’s been important, though, for me to understand my limits. It may seem crazy, but I was working out on both the day after my lumpectomy surgery and the implantation of my port. Rather than going through my normal routine of cardio and weight training, though, I was forced to take it down a notch – and have been taking it easy.

Lately that’s meant an hour on the exercise bike, with no weight training. My calorie burn is much lower than usual and obviously I’m only exercising my leg muscles. Not ideal by any means but at least I’m doing something beneficial for my body.

Exercise is good not only for your body but also for your emotional well being. As I prepare to begin chemo my hope is that I’ll be strong enough in my spirit to get out and do it – to the best of my ability – every day that I’m physically able. I hope this message will inspire you to take the very best care of yourself that you can, no matter what’s going on in your body or your mind.
